What is Carbon Fiber Reinforcement (CFRP)?
' Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers', known as CFRP or FRP ; It is an externally applied reinforcement system for reinforced concrete, masonry and wooden structural elements. System elements include carbon fiber fabric and epoxy-based impregnation resin. It is an externally applied reinforcement system for reinforced concrete, masonry and wooden structural elements. System elements; carbon fiber fabric and epoxy based impregnation resin.
In the structure and structural element where they are applied, opportunities such as increasing the load-carrying capacity, increasing bending strength, improving durability, and strengthening the fatigue resistance from dynamic loads are provided. Since it is a light and flexible material, it does not cause an increase in dead load in the structure.
Carbon fiber fabric, a type of carbon fiber, is a material as thin as shirt fabric and is one of the strongest materials known in the
world. Although fabric-thin carbon fiber is 14 times more tensile resistant than steel, its weight is around one-fifth of steel.
After it is cut with scissors and applied to the walls, it solidifies like a steel plate.
Brick walls reinforced with carbon fiber polymers reduce the back and forth movement of the structure during an earthquake
and increase rigidity, thus minimizing the risk of damage to the building in an earthquake. Carbon fiber is a structural
reinforcement material that can be easily applied externally to all building elements, and it is also possible to cover the
reinforced walls with plaster or plasterboard from the outside, giving them the appearance of a normal wall.
In carbon fiber application, the preparation of the surface to be bonded must be in appropriate conditions. First of all, the
concrete surface is cleaned of dirt, dust, weak areas, plaster and paint by sandblasting or grinding method, and surface
defects are corrected. Prepared epoxy adhesives are applied to the prepared surface. Carbon fiber is stretched and bonded
and saturated with epoxy. After the carbon fiber application, a final coat of epoxy is applied. If a protective coating is to be
made, sand is sprinkled on it, finally plastered and the process is completed.
