Carbon Fiber Yarn
Carbon fiber yarn is a type of yarn made
from thin and strong filaments composed mostly of carbon atoms. These filaments
are known as carbon fibers and are produced through a chemical process
involving precursor materials like polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rayon, or petroleum
pitch. It is used in the manufacturing of composite materials, particularly
those made with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP).It consists of a bundle
of continuous, untwisted carbon fiber filaments, typically ranging from 1000
to 50,000 filaments per roving.
Carbon fiber yarn is created into bundles of carbon fibers. Bundles are rated according to their fiber or filament content and are commonly referred to as 3k, 6k, 12k, and 15k. k stands for “kilo” and indicates that a 3k bundle consists of 3,000 carbon filaments. Since a single carbon fiber is only about 5-10 microns thick, a 3k bundle is only about 0.125 inches thick. A 6k bundle would then be about twice as thick as a 3k bundle, a 12k would be four times as thick, and so on. There are a lot of strong carbon fibers in such a compact space, which gives the carbon fiber material its incredible strength.
